The Plainsman
During my undergraduate years at Auburn University, I occasionally (when I had time) wrote for the college newspaper, the Auburn Plainsman. Mostly editorial pieces, but some news and feature spots as well. Here are a selected few of them.
- I Am An Auburn Student - Written in response to the firestorm of negative publicity that surrounded my university after a series of racially offensive photos were taken at two fraternity parties in the fall of 2002.
- Believe - In 2001, Auburn defeated the #1 team in the nation just days after no editor at The Plainsman pronounced that we would.
- The Gospel According To Auburn - In the beginning...
- On The Route - A look into the daily life of a Tiger Transit driver.
- Strumpler's Madness - The ignorant comments of an administrator were the source of this diatribe.
- "There's A Lot Of Work To Be Done" - For the College of Architecture, Design and Construction, Tonte Peters is leading the push for minorities.
- Willie Walker and Amendment One - An editorial following then Auburn President William Walker's misuse of the student e-mail list.
- Camping - A short feature column describing one experience I had while I was a park ranger in Yellowstone.
Anger!
- US Space & Rocket Center - My anger directed at the US Space and Rocket Center here in Huntsville and how they no longer give tours of the Marshall Spaceflight Center due to "security concerns."
Poetry
- Fire -
The result of way too many beers and singing around a campfire.
- Rage -
I've made a lot of mistakes. I can't let them go.
- Silence -
I'm still not quite sure what inspired that.
- Darkness - During my very brief "goth" phase.
- Arrow - I sometimes feel like I'm living in the shadow of my former self.
- Fate - More whiny goth poetry - now with added nihlism!
- Perfection - More whiny goth poetry.
- Who I Am - I'm actually rather proud of this one, as it summarizes the Summer of 2002 for me rather well.
Essays Attention would-be plagiarizers: By copying someone else's work rather than doing it yourself, you are cheating yourself out of your education. Ultimately, the only way to learn is to do, and if you don't do and instead copy my essays, what will you have accomplished? These papers are on file with most reputable plagiarism-checking outfits. If I find any of these works have been plagiarised for academic credit, I will cooperate fully with any duly-empowered academic honesty hearing, and will initiate seperate legal action for copyright infringement. If I don't catch you ... karma will.
- A Struggle For Right: G.I. Jane - University Essay, Fall 2000.
I am enormously proud of this paper. This was my final essay in Freshman Composition at Auburn, a film study of the movie G.I. Jane , and a profile of sexism in the military. It was published in a literary journal and is also used as a teaching aide ! A bit more than I expected when I scribbled it down in a notebook. I'm currently in the process of revising it, but the revision will be posted seperately from the original.
- The Biblical Heroine: An Analysis of Gender and Heroics - University Essay, Fall 2002.
Great Books paper that studies the role of women in several books of the Old Testament of the Bible. An interesting read, but frankly not my best work.
- The Union of Celtic and Christian Symbolism: Sir Gawain And The Green Knight - University Essay, Fall 2002.
Second Great Books paper that I'm more proud of. This one studies how early Christanity approprated symbols of the older Pagan religions as reflected in older literature, specifically, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight .
- Alienation - University Essay, Spring 2003.
My final paper I wrote for my core curriculum at Auburn. This one is a study of themes of alienation in works by Kafka and Marx.
