About Kiran Lightpaw

I really don't think there's that much to tell about me.

I was born in the small hamlet of Palm Bay, Florida (half-hour southeast of Orlando) and lived there for the first eight years of my life. Dad worked as an engineer at a large government contractor in Melbourne. One of my most vivid memories as a child is of being able to go out in the backyard and seeing the arching flame of the Space Shuttle as it knifed skyward. Inspiration?

I moved to Concord, Tennessee in 1989 and lived there for the next seven years. Concord is a small farming town in East Tennessee on the shores of Fort Loudon Lake. I spent a strange year in Memphis before moving back to Concord in 1997. In 2000, I graduated from Farragut High School in nearby Farragut, Tennessee and headed off to college.

From 2000 until 2005, I lived in Auburn, Alabama while I studied at Auburn University, except for 2002, which I spend a good chunk of in Wyoming working as a Park Ranger in Yellowstone National Park (something I had done several previous years on a seasonal basis). Since 2005, I've lived in Huntsville, Alabama, where I work as a software engineer in the telecommunications industry.

I hold a Bachelor's Degree from Auburn University, where I studied Public Relations and Journalism in the Auburn College of Liberal Arts with a specialization in online communications. So. How does one with a degree in public relations end up in as a software engineer? Well, a fascination for tinkering and taking things apart, for one. Only mine never manifested itself in the typical engineer fascination for mechanics - I was busy decompiling software, figuring out how developers had made things happen and how the computer functioned from a software side. When I started in software engineering at Auburn, I found the program wasn't moving fast enough for me - many of the people in it had little experience with computers and were in there "because it pays well." So I decided to gravitate towards my other fascination: writing.

I'm also heavily into anthropomorphics. I've been involved with the anthropormophic - or "furry" - fandom for more than a decade and it has been an enriching and rewarding experience, especially all the wonderful people I've managed to meet and interesting experiences I've had. I think that, too often in the fandom people just sit behind their computers and don't interact face-to-face with others. I'm on the Executive Committee of Furry Weekend Atlanta, a convention for furry fans held in Atlanta, Georgia, as well as being on Mission Control (board of directors) and the registration coordinator for Rocket City Furmeet here in Huntsville. I'm also active with the local group, NARF, here in Huntsville.

Special Note: I have mild degenerative hearing loss in both of my ears. While I don't need hearing aids right now, I sometimes have a difficult time hearing especially in crowded or noisy environments. Please don't be upset if I ask you to repeat something or to speak louder. The best things you can do to help me: 1) speak somewhat slowly and enunciate clearly, and 2) look directly at me so I can see your lips.
